This computer was given to me and I found a dead power supply. Replaced it with Morex 200 watt it fit in the case with room to spare.  Had to splice in a power plug as it was short 1 . Hooked up all the cables checked them to make sure they were all seated. hooked up Monitor keyboard and mouse hit the on switch and Nada nothing shows on the monitor. THe fan on the power supply runs the CD door will not open.I tried moving the jumper on the CD ROM to different positions.  Where do I start with this?

Considering Digital was acquired by Compaq in 1998, and the PC in question is of a 1995 vintage from corporate usage, there's every chance that a lot more is wrong with this PC than just the power supply - the CD drive could well be dead (jumper settings should not affect whether the drive opens or not), and if you're getting no beeps at startup and nothing from the onboard video, you could very well have a dead motherboard, bad RAM, a dead processor, or a combination of those.   While you could try to fix this system, the time and effort would probably be better spent on working with a known, good PC, or building a new PC from parts of your choosing.

Is there anything special about this PC that you want to get it running, or is it more out of curiosity?

If I disconnect the flat ribbon cable from Cd ROM the door opens and closes all the cables have the red stripe facing the powerplug.

As far as the CDROM goes, if disconnecting the cable is allowing the drive to open and close, that means the cable is connected upside down either to the motherboard, the drive, or both.   The red stripe is supposed to connect to pin 1 on both the motherboard and the drive, see:

for details and illustration.

ray, keep in mind cost as you start to assess how and whether to repair this PC.  You may be able to spend $100-200 repairing it, or even upgrading it, but the question is what will be the result once you're done.  If this type of work interests you, you may want to considering putting together custom PCs in addition to troubleshooting old ones - that would give you the opportunity to explore PC components from a fresh angle (new components versus used) and could get your grandson a more useful PC for the long run.

I have been listening to the good advise that has been giving. This computeris for a 7 Yr. old Great Great Grandson .  I have set a $50 limit and have spent #20 on a power supply. So unless I find free or nearly free computer for parts I will have to set this project aside until I do .  In the meantime I will keep pluging a long who knows maybe I will get lucky.
Thanks

Ray,

given your budget for this, you might considering going to your loca lSalvation Army or Goodwill to see if they have any used PCs;  in my area (NY/CT) many of those outlets have used systems for very low prices, and might be useful either for parts or for a PC for your great grandson.
