asked on

Game Dev

Hi all,

As we discussed with some experts...
The rules of this question are:
- NO questions asked - any such will be deleted and if an expert start to answer here, they may have some troubles :)
- No mails and personal accusations and insults
- No points here or through a "Points for" question will be awarded. Any attempt in it will be stopped.

Anything else is allowed.
The idea of the question is to give you a place where you can just talk - about anything related to Game Dev but also about anything else... The rules of EE are still valid except that there is NO off-topic comments here - anything can be posted.

Let me know what you think. It is an experiment... so let's see how it will go

*Grins*  Thankyou Ms. Venabili!

This should be cool for any dev's to just talk about non-question related things.  Stuff I've seen in questions where dev's want to argue about things or discuss the aspects or strengths of certain aspects of a certain technique they are currently using, like myself using C++ as opposted to C# or Java.  Plus it is a cool place to get to know other dev's in the field.  I know there aren't many of us but I know dev's like davebytes and myself  are currently the only ones I know of active in the industry.  Are there any others hiding out in the threads that haven't said hello yet?

Anywho...  Feel free to check my profile for contact info if you ever feel like shooting a comment my way and noticed I haven't seen a thread you want my response to.  That and I'm always up for helping out in School Choices, class runs for what you should do if you want to be a dev.  (Although enough people ask about this it should be formed as a question but individual school programs have different classes and I'm always up for helping someone break through the ice into the industry)

Cool time to B.S. and get to know more about eachother!

I promised to start a thread - I am strating a thread. And I will make sure noone is misusing it :)

This thread can be used for this also - to call you in questions when I need you... Or other experts to ask the ones here for help. We will see how things are going :)

Well, I might start off with a discussion then.  Don't take this a *question* in EE style.

Have any of you messed with the new framebuffer objects EXT extension?  Any thoughts of strengths or weaknesses?  There are a noticeable few of course:

1)  Allows different targets in the same context (no need to switch contex to use a pbuffer).

...

Ah god... no one posts... no one asks questions any more... Unless it's a 50 point js question or a 500 point js question where they want you to write their entire program / script for them...

*sighs*

I'm gonna lose my expert rank if I don't get another 300 points... AHHHH!!! *laughs*
Cleanup is cheduled for this week but the points will come next month...

PS: You have a grace month - you will keep the status even if you  miss a month.. Need to make 3000 in the next though :)
Venabili I don't know if you'll be able to do this but there is a question out in the C++ area about OpenGL and BMP image coordinates that belongs in game dev.  I left a post for the local admin to move it but he hasn't responded or looked or posted to it for that matter.  I don't know if there is a way you can contact him and let him know it needs moved here.  The url is:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21476489/OpenGL-cordinates-to-bytes-on-a-bitmap.html

~Aqua

PS:  I managed via clean-up to nail my points down... A few last minute posts and a clean up thread got me through so I don't need 8k points this month to stay a non-end user in the eyes of experts-exchange...  ;-)
Moved :)

Thankyou Venabili...

Hey dave...  I dunno if you ever even check here anymore but c'mmon.. you've been logged in for a few days straigth now... let me have the featured expert spotlight for a while... ;-)

*laughs*

~Aqua
The featured expert is the one having the biggest number of points for the last calendar month. :) It is changed once a month...
Oh... *laughs*  .... Then nevermind dave...  Ya beat me last month.  *laughs* There are no dang questions to answer in gamedev while school is out... *growls*  I had to switch to answering js questions to pass time.  >.<;

~Aqua
AHHH!!! What is it with people and not posting gamedev question in gamedev:

Venabili sorry to bug you again but....:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21487348/Texturing-an-OpenGl-Quad-with-a-bitmap-stored-in-a-GluByte-Array.html
Done :)
Well... seems like after all this question is making something
It is no problem to ask me to move these :)

Venabili
*Picks you up and hugs you*  (Gamedev questions are slow... So I've been scoping the C++ archives for GameDev questions because I don't want to answer C++ questions.. *laughs*)

~Aqua the Unwater... mwahaha
The whole folder here is slow... but it is at least clean *smiling*
Heh...

It's good to be back on top.  ;-)

Dave!!!  I beat you for the year!  Only a little to go and I'll have you for all time too!

Hey guys,

Time to (hopefully) revive the thread with some fresh meat.  I'm pretty new to game dev, and I've been wondering something.  I have a copy of an old Renderware Graphics SDK (from my old school, don't call the cops) and I've been using that to tool around with, but I was just wondering what your opinions were of using that versus building my own system from OpenGL or DX, as far as experience goes.  I'm not in the industry yet and don't misconstrue this as another "How do I get in..." question because lord knows there's enough of them.  I'm just wondering because I know Renderware might not be so widely used as to make this experience incredibly valuable, but then again, any experience is good experience.  Ok, enough rambling from the new guy.  Dig in. :)

- Alex
Alex you are going to want to ask a question in the threads actually.  This thread is more for BS'ing rather than answering questions.  :-)

If you post a question in GameDev about this I'll make sure to give you some pointers.  ;-)

~Aqua
Oh.  My bad.  Thanks for the redirect.

BS hmmmm..... I have never eaten tuna.
How can you have never eaten Tuna!?  IT's the chicken of the Sea and rather good with some Mayo and celery on a sandwich.  ;-)

~Aqua
AHHHH!!!

I know none of you ever check this thread but if you happen by chance to take a glance:

I just applied for a Generalist programmer position at Bungie!!!  *Holds his breath*  I'm nervous about this one!  Heh... If any of you have any contacts with Bungie in Washington State USA please put the good word in for me!   :-)

Let me know what you guys think!

~Aqua
Congratulations :)
Grats Dave  :-)

First with a Masters Certif in Game Dev.  Impressive none to say the least... And passing me by 500 points for the year.  ;-)

I have some work to do to get that back... But now I have to be #2 to the masters cerfit... more people need to ask questions!  *laughs*  None the less... Congrats Dave.  :-)

~Aqua
Game Dev areas cleanup is scheduled for 24/25th December :) So make sure you have place in your mailboxes :)
Seems like this thread is not used... if there is a need of new one in the future, I will make sure I open one.
*laughs*  I was about to suggest that...  :-)  We need to make it sticky or something!  Get our new experts in here...

There's a lot that can be chatted about between aspiring Game Dev's, the trick is getting them to start talking!  (That and I put a suggestion in that will fall upon deaf ears to put a warning like there is on the lounge for game dev about the countless botting questions we constantly get.  Something along the lines:

"We cannot answer questions dealing with Mods, Hacks, or Botting as these all fall under the Terms Of Service for nearly every game created and also is against Experts Exchange Terms of Service.  Please do not harass our experts with these types of questions as they will not answer them anyway.  Save your time and ours!"

*shrugs*  It's a good suggestion but with the new up comming changes to EE being more PS focused I fear any suggestions by experts will just be ignored.  *sighs*  Same reasons why CobolDino left... Only now they are making it worse.  As long as they let me keep my profile and my certificates I'll be content answering my GameDev questions though...

~Aqua
If you stop answering, I may need to start answering questions :)
And I prefer not to :)

Well... I will fight to keep Game Dev as good as I can,..
*grins*  I won't stop answering questions.  Every now and then I fall behind due to life and don't answer as many as I usually do but I do come back and take care of business... :-P

GameDev is my favorite TA.. May not be the most frequently posted in, but it is my favorite.  I run to JavaScript from time to time to pick off a few questions when GameDev is overly slow but... *shrugs*  ...I found my TA, you don't gotta worry about me leaving Ven.. ;-)

Although if you leave and we get a crappy PE and CleanUp person I might have to go to game dev. uni or some place and start answering there... *laughs*  ...  But I like it here for some reason.

~Aqua
I am not planning to get anywhere for now :)
It reminds me for my  old days as Game developer... Recently I am not even touching this... but I miss it :)
:-P  Got any contacts you can hook me up with still in the industry Ven?

I've been dealing with Kimo quite a bit... and he's the one that suggested the Cabal for my idea for a MMO...  (Took a lot of trust to tell him my idea.. but.. *laughs*  ..was my only shot)  But actually getting an interview with any companies is another story.  Its a tough industry to get a foot in the door... but I'm stubborn and determined... and one way or another... I'll get in.

~Aqua
I was a working in a company which was working on outsourced things... And it just turned out that for a loooong time I was writing games for TVs, games for consoles, DirectX and OpenGL stuff and so on... No real contacts... we were getting a project, finishing it and get another one...

Try to send resumes in all companies which you know? :)
