Getting constantly alerted about aspnet_wp.exe by firewall

I'm developing a web application in Visual Studio and every time I try to run or debug I get alerts from my firewall (even when there is no activity going on) because aspnet_wp.exe needs outbound access to the internet. The firewall keeps alerting even when I give full access rights to aspnet_wp.exe.

Can anyone tell me what aspnet_wp.exe is, why it needs intenet access and how to stop it ?

If you created the web project with a full machine name (like “machinename.domainname.something”), the web site is recognized as “Internet” site.
Is that the case with you?

I don't think so ... just created with a normal name (tho' it is a web app)

I mean if visit your application like http://machine name/application,
it is treated as an internet site and have to pass the firewall.
But if you visit it as http://localhost/application, it is not.

http://localhost is already set as an intranet zone so should be 'trusted' anyway shouldn't it ? (It's not possible to set it up as a trusted zone without taking it out of the intranet zone)

That's really strange.

aspnet_wp.exe is the ASP.NET worker process.
When a request for a asp.net resource is delivered to IIS,
IIS redirect it to aspnet.dll which in turn executes aspnet_wp.exe
to fullfil the request.

Since the internet zone only concerns about inbound traffic, while
what you saw is outbound activity, so that should be irrelavant.

By default, localhost is the LOCAL HOST and will not pass the
firewall. I have tested it on my computer and it works as predicted.
When I access my web page from the local machine, the firewall
has no effect. But when I access it from another computer, the firewall
kicks in. And you should add TCP port 80 to exceptions in your firewall
to be able to visit your web page from another computer.

I just don't understand why it passes firewall with localhost.
Can you try with 127.0.0.1 instead of localhost?

Er sorry but no ... I gave up and uninstalled the firewall! I have a firewall on the network anyway so it was a bit pointless on the dev machine. In case anyone is interested the firewall was McAfee .... I wonder if it was more to do with the Firewall than it was with aspnet ... It certainly seems fine without it.

I think the problem is with the firewall.
I guess that. McaFee intercepts all network traffic no matter if it's local traffic(I'm not sure though)
I had thought that your firewall meant the firewall comes with windows xp.
There is no problem with that.

Yeah I think you are right .... McAfee had parameters to accept all LAN traffic as OK but I think it doesn't work! Anyway thanks for the chat hehe
