send/receive won't stop

This just started and don't know what's causing it...

After closing Outlook 2003, the send/receive continues to operate on it's scheduled.  Previously once I closed the application the send/receive stopped.  Can't think of a setting that I would have changed.  Advise please.

    Try this

    Tools > Options
    Click the 'Mail Setup' Tab
    Click 'Send/Receive' button
At the bottom where it says 'When Outlook is Offline' have you 'Schedule an automatic send/receive every' ...
ticked. If so un tick it and see if this cures your problem.

    Hope this helps
