Netfinity 2nd CPU recognition
Hi. I have a Netfinity 5000 (4RY) with a single 500 pIII.
I bought a match for it and plugged it in, but it is not recognised.
The 1st 4 dip settings are for the speed of the 1st CPU, I have no docs for the machine (except notes on lid).
What do I need to do to get the 2nd cpu (which is identical) to be recognised?
Cheers
Peter

BIOS does not recognise it.
I am running Windows Server 2003. Wilkl that need to be reinstalled as well?

The system should boot ok but you will still only see one CPU from the operating system since you will have a Uniprocessor HAL installed so you need to install a Multiprocessor HAL. This can be done in Windows Server 2003 very easily. See the following Microsoft Windows 2000 guideline.

You will probably need to update the BIOS if your Server does not reconize the second CPU. You say (4RY) I presume you mean the Netfinity 5000 model number: 86594RY. You can get a BIOS update for the Server from IBM's website. There are a few options to choose from depending what configuration you have. This is a link to one of them, but you will have to see if it is for the correct configuration you have. Please make sure it's the correct one before you proceed.

If this is not the model, you will have to go to IBM's website and download the correct model's update.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the windows bit, I will try that when I get the CPU recognised by the BIOS.
The link you gave me appears to be for the SCSI Raid controller, not the main CPU????
I tested before that I had the latest bios installed and I do.

Oops, sorry. Here's the correct link, but seeing that you say that you have the newest BIOS installed, you probaby won't need it. It was 1am over here, so the head was a bit stuffy.

I'm wondering if the two CPU's will run correctly as a pair. Have you tried to run the server with the original CPU removed and the new one only in the machine. Just to make sure the Server will well recognise the new CPU and work with it ?

Have you tried to run the new CPU alone in the machine as I recommended? If the new CPU is correctly detected and you add the old CPU as the second unit, what happens then?
I would like to know if the CPU's will be detected then, will they run as a pair then and or is there something else we need to look at.

Watzman on another post mentioned this and was kind enough to shine a light on something I almost forgot to confirm.
I forgot to mention one thing. You said that you bought another CPU that is identical. Are the Chips "exactly" identical. You need to have a look at the stepping of the CPU's to determine if they will run as a pair. They have to have the same stepping, and that stepping has to support dual CPU (SMP). This is determined by the S-Spec of the CPU and is a series of numbers on the CPU itself. You need to determine if the S-Spec of the CPU's are the same. ALL the numbers on the CPU has to be the same. S-Specs can be looked up on the Intel web site, and if they support Dual CPU or not.

Been a week since we last heard of you Peter, have you come right or what's happening?

Sorry, it's been difficult to schedule the time to take the server down again.
I will try to get it done this weekend.

I think the CPU must have been dead because I swapped it and nothing worked.
Thanks

Thx for the points Peter. I hope you do get a working CPU and get that Server working like you want it to.

If it is a Windows install you must reinstall it once you add the second processor. Windows uses two different kernals for single and multi processor systems, so it will not show the second prosessor unless you re-install your software.
