CD-R media aren't recognized by my DVD-burning device

It is actually very strange, since the drive still reads CD-ROMs (just as my burned WinXP copy, I think it doesn't show up while booting due to a bios setting, but I can explore it without problems), and even one (!) brand of CD-R: Proviews CD-RW discs. I will now try to install the drive on another machine, and think about claiming my warranty at the same. The broken laser can't be the real cause, while it seemed indeed very plausible. So what now?

run msconfig and post the entries in "Services" and "Startup" here. Maybe there is a service or program preventing the drive from functioning correctly.

If it still reads all factory pressed CDs and at least some CD-R's, I'm more inclined to wonder about your media, but if that's not the cause, I'm still inclined to think it's a marginally bad drive.  This kind of things happens a lot, my luck with most optical drives has been horrible.  However, I've had good luck with Samsung drives (which this is, of course) and Pioneer DVD burners (never yet had a bad one).

here's a slightly stripped off hijack, with the same entries as in msconfig. I have mentioned those that have been stopped. I also saw some conspicious tracks of pinnacle, but since it used to work together with nero I don't think that's the main problem. But you now, 2005, everything's possible. Note that some entries are Dutch, but it quite easy to see that 'Applicatie Manager' can be translated as 'Application Manager'. Opstarten = start up. Stuurprogramma = driver.

Watzman, I think you're right. I used to have an ordinary cd-rom drive that was also unable to read CD-RW's, and I threw it away. But it nevertheless is a pitty that I'll have to send it back while it still reads DVD nicely. I don't question TDK and Sony, or one cheaper spindle that always worked before. Besides, even the five minute Proview CD-RW miracle is now passé. Perhaps someone will find something that has to to with the services, but tomorrow I'll stop searching.
