    URL rewriting is typically used to make complex dynamic URLs more search engine friendly.  For example, it might change to  Experts-Exchange is a good example of this at work.  Without URL rewriting, the URL for this page would probably be something like this -

    If using Apache, URL rewriting is generally done using the mod_rewrite module.  This involves making entries in your httpd.conf file (for server-wide effect) or .htaccess file (for site or directory specific effect).  You can see more info here -

    Microsoft/IIS doesn't have anything comparable built in, but you can use a third-party ISAPI filter, ie., to do the same thing.
