Hello there,

Somehow we have a problem! our CD/DVD dissappearing! Their drive letters E and F aren't even in windows explorer. I ran the device manager driver uninstal reinstall but it said they might not work properly. The drives aren't listed. When the computer (XP Pro) boots the CD rom light comes on but nothing else!! help...please.  This computer has never had any problems till this.

Thank You! :)

Check to see if the drives are listed in Disk Management.

Since the drives did work I'd assume first that we have an IDE cable problem. To check this move the slave on the secondary cable to the slave posotion on the primary cable. You might have to juggle the postion of the drives to do this but in some case the primary IDE cable will be long enough to reach the second drive.
Also disconnect the secondary cable completely but noting the position of the red number one wire side of the ribbon.

On reboot can you now see this drive as the D drive?

The computer hasn't been moved so it's not a cable...where is Disk Management in XP Pro? I think I just need to assign a drive letter? It's been along time and I'm still learning XP. Hubby says run scandisk but hows that going to find and assign the drives. Help....:[]

In WinXP you go into Disk Management to change drive letters.
>> Start > right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management >>
You can change the Drive Letter by right clicking the appropriate drive in the right pane

Hi Greta,
The cables are inside the computer so you would have to open up the case to follow my suggestion. This might be more than you would want to tackle.

Tell me, when you first start up the computer, there is something called POST.

during this POST it should show that you have cd/dvd/hard drives installed do you see that?

If not, try hitting the DEL key when the computer is first starting up. this will take you to the BIOS screen.

Usually the option you will need to look at will be highlighted first, so all you have to do is hit the enter key, i belive this is typically called "disk management".

in disk management do you see your CD drives? (if you see the word AUTO alot don't worry about it)

there is also an option called "detectet hard drives" or "detect ide devices", use that option and see if it detects the dvd/cd rom drives.

no matter what, do not save your changes unless you really know what you are doing.

if the computer does not see the deviceses, then one or both of them have failed and you will need to go to a pc repair shop and get it fixed.

if it does see the deviceses,,, tell us and we will work from there.
