Problems to receive GPS signals in a city

Hello,

Does anyone have already tested GPS receivers extensively in cities? I'm living in Belgium and I would like to start a company offering location based games in cities. I would like to know if in general GPS receivers do work properly in cities. Do they receive the satellite signals well and are they able to compute a position?

I know there are problems with 'urban canyons' in American cities, but belgian cities are not that big to speak of such canyons...

Are there any GPS receivers you can recommend to use especially in cities, and if possible, that are very handy to carry while playing a game?

Thanks,

Generally GPS receivers work well in Cities, but with a few difficulties.

1.  Tall buildings can block signals or limit the number of satellites you can receive signals from
2.  Signals can bounce off buildings and cause error in your position.  This is called Multi path error.

Generally this shouldnt be a big problem depending on how much position error you can tolerate.
Hope this helps

Thank you. But did anyone already have a test playing a game in a city? And were there many interferences of the signals? Is there any receiver that you could recommend for playing in the city?

>>offering location based games in cities.

So the user will be playing games indoor (most probably).... There is almost no receiver that works indoors.... You will have to give the antenna a clear view of he sky....
So you will have to keep this too in mind if you are developing an application related to GPS.....
BTW I have no knowledge about location based games....

Well, the games are 100% outdoors. Take a look at this page for some good examples: http://www.in-duce.net/archives/locationbased_mobile_phone_games.php

I'm thinking of using DGPS. Does anyone have experience with this? Do you need special GPS receivers to use it?
