I'm looking for a good description of the HTML tag hierarchy, i.e., an explanation of the parents, children, or containers for all tags.  This is so I can predict the inheritance of formatting as applied through CSS.  Could anyone point me to a nice visual representation or perhaps an outline tree of the HTML tag hierarchy?

Hi Eternal_Student,

This doesn't completely answer your question, but does contain a sample hierarchy, and seems to be a fairly definitive document on the use of CSS.

Cheers,

I'm not looking for a pointer to well-known site.  I've already looked through the well-known HTML reference sites.

I'm looking for a pointer to a specific info, that is, the total listing of the HTML tag hierarchy.

ok, sorry, some-one should come thru with a decent link. But w3 has it some-where if you have a in-depth look.

leslieinva,

I fully agree with the links suggested by Eternal Student.

Although a document tree can be creating using the HTML doctype, I am not sure what you are intending to do.
You say you need it for css referencing, but isn't it embedded within css itself that you apply that language to specific combinations of tags and not on some generic set of tags?

Here is a direct URL to a page with a table listing all the HTML tags and a short description: http://w3schools.com/html/html_reference.asp

Just click on the tag to get a complete descripition with information about the tag.

I have already checked with Google & w3c.  I'm looking for a document tree of all html tags, showing parents & children that doesn't necessarily represent any specific document, just the inheritance structure of html in general.  There's a piece of a document tree in the pdf mentioned by Steve Bagnall above on p. 52.

HomeSite used to provide a document tree view of a page that was useful.  Dreamweaver has an extension, "Show Document Tree," for doing something similar, but I wanted a tree of all tags in general, not just those on one page.   I can't believe somebody hasn't created a complete tree of all tags somewhere on the web.  Let me know if you see such a document.
