Can I force a SQLfull backup on diff job if a full doesn't exist

I am currently doing weeday differential backups on SQL and Weekend Full
If someone creates a new database on a Monday, the jobs report failed for the rest of the week until I get a full backup of the new database.
The exact error is:
Cannot perform a differential backup for database 'ReportServer', because a current database backup does not exist. Perform a full database backup by reissuing BACKUP DATABASE, omitting the WITH DIFFERENTIAL option.

Is it possible to force a full backup if one doesn't exist?
If not, is it possible to have it not report the job as failed?

You can't force it automatically; you can ceate one manually.
How large are the databases?
If you have enough disk space to create database dumps from a maintenance plan, you might want to consider that.  If you select all databases, even new ones will dump.

Another alternative--I don't know the size of the databases you're backing up--is to keep your differential jobs but eliminate SQL from the job.  Then setup SQL to append the tape in a full SQL backup.  You also can reverse that order--which you might want to do.

Run a full SQL backup, and then set your differentila job to run immediately afterwards but append the SQL full backup media.

It's an online SQL Backup, and the databases aren't very big. I was just curious if I couldn't make it do a full backup of a database if one didn't exist; or at least not have it report as failed because a full didn't exist.

I'm an idiot. I didn't even specify that this was through Backup Exec.

I could tell by the lingo that it was Backup exec ;-)
Unfortunately, BE does not have that option.  I hope in the future they allow a failure to trigger an alternative job.  It's really needed.

never do a differential backup of sql.....that is a no no....always do a full backup using veritas.

i had to restore an sql database with differentials...and it was a nightmare.
I had to run a long series of different diagnostics and repair utilities on my sql database and got alot of corruption/database inconsistency errors.

Have you had success with the full SQL backups followed by your appended differential jobs?

OpTiCzAuthor Commented:
No, I'll probably have to run a full job instead of differentials. That or manually fire off a full manually once a new database is created.

Have you ever used a maintenance plan in SQL to schedule backups?
You can choose to apply the backup to ALL databses; therefore, when a new database is created, it automatically is added to the backup.

That's what I have set. But since a FULL backup doesn't exist, it can't create a differential so the job fails; or at least says it does.

Don't run differential SQL backups; run full SQL backups.
Create the full backup.

How much data are you backing up?

OpTiCzAuthor Commented:
Maybe 35GB.

If storage for the backup is an issue, can you split the jobs?
Is there an issue with backing up the DBs in full every night?

OpTiCzAuthor Commented:
Probably not.

Hi.  How's the backup going?

I basically need to run a full backup manually then the differentials will work. I just let everyone know to notify me when they add a database.
