Unknown Publisher Problem

Posted on 2005-04-08
Last Modified: 2011-08-18

We market our products from a website. Since XP Sp2 some of our users wanting to download our setups are shown  a message that the Publisher is unknown. I have found out that this happens when the Internet Explorer Security setting is set at medium. Also I have found out its because the files are not digitally signed. Will digitally sigining the files solve the problem and if yes what are the steps required to obtain a digital signature

    Accepted Solution

Is the content in a CAB file? If so you really ought to be signing it for security reasons.
Getting a certificate is relatively easy, just look for a reseller in your country or ask someone like Verisign or Thwaite.

If we obtain a certificate say from Verisign will the Unknown Publisher Dialog box not appear again

Almost undoubtably so - that is unless an obtuse user undoes the Verisign authentication!
