Found this on HP Website - How to do a partial reset.  I would say if this doesn't work, then the printer is probably dead.

Good Luck!

A partial reset will return user settings to factory defaults. On some models, language and country/region settings are also reset. Perform a partial reset of the product by following the instructions below.

Unplug the power cord from the unit.

Press and hold # and 3 while plugging in the power cord.

When reset displays, release both buttons.

Can you give more details?  Is this error on the printer, in Window, or are you using a MAC?  What are you doing to get this error? Scanning, Printing, nothing, error just pops up?

It is on the printer display. The second line of the display shows garbage characters. It is currently not even attached to a computer but even when it is the same thing occurs.
The machine is a Windows XP workstation.
The message is there even when its first plugged in and cant be removed. The COPY/FAX/SCAN lights are all flashing together.

I wonder if there is a reset function.
If the above fails, this give some instructions on doing a FULL RESET of your printer.
I assume the partial reset worked, or are we assuming the printer is toast?
