Lexmark X5270 All-In-One scanner will not install

I have a fairly new HP pavilion desktop computer running Windows XP pro. I'm not an IT expert, but I'm reasonably computer savvy for a "consumer."  (I am a scientist in my day job.)

The HP came with a Lexmark All-in-one X5270 printer. The copier and printer work fine. Whenever I try to use the scanner, a box pops up in the middle of the screen saying "Preparing Lexmark all-in-one center for first use. Searching for scanning applications."  There is no way to shut the box down, it never "finds" scanning applications (like Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc.) that are loaded on the computer, and I have to restart the machine to re-initialize. The scanner has never worked. We are now on our second printer (it's been 8 months; they replaced it under warranty.) Lexmark doesn't have a clue what the problem is. I think there is a software conflict. (Actually, I think their software just doesn't work) but I can't imagine mine is the only computer in the world with this problem. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I used the disk. I downloaded the most recent version from lexmark's web site.  I tried reinstalling with Norton Internet Security turned off and the Windows firewall off, but nothing seems to fix it. I don't think this is uninstalling properly so can't reinstall properly--I think there is a problem left over from the first failed install that's preventing subsequent correction efforts to take effect. Oh, I've also tried just installing the drivers and not the lexmark all-in-one software, but the scanner is never recognized by XP.  I'm not sure if it is supposed to show up as a separate entity though. XP seems to know it is there, but nothing shows under "scanners and cameras."

Any advice would be appreciated.

when you install the software, do you see it installing the scanner at some point?
-you can try installing the printer on another system, then you would know if it is a printer problem, or a PC problem
-you can try making an offline copy, then you would know the scanner works
-if it does not, ask for a warranty replacement

Hi Nobus-

Thanks for the suggestion. I installed the machine and software on my daughter's Dell computer--also running XP pro--and the software worked just fine. (As I noted above, the copy function works so I assumed the scanner was physically working.) On my daughter's computer I got the "Preparing Lexmark all-in-one center . . ."  message for maybe 30sec, then the software came up and I was able to scan and print an image, and import images into other applications. I could close the program, then open it up again and it worked fine--it did not try to "initialize" itself agan. The same software has never worked on my HP desktop.

So, bottom line is that I think I have some sort of software conflict between the lexmark software and my HP computer (P4, 3Ghz, 512M RAM, XP pro). Like I said, I think it didn't install right the first time, and I don't think it has ever uninstalled properly (despite my many efforts) for me to do a clean re-install.

Well, Beth, you can of course chat online with HP about your problem :

or you can uninstall all the Lexmark software, then check
-in Program Files for Lexmark folders and delete them
-in Windows for lexmark or twain folders and delete them
then try again to reinstall
