Library vs Template

I'm thinking of using Contribute to give people the ability to edit their own web pages.
Contribute uses Templates.

I'm not sure of the benefits/differences between Templates and Library items.
Both will update all the pages in the site that use them if they're changed.

Think of it like this..,

If you look at this page, the ee page we're on, you'll see that it looks, or lays out, like most other pages on the Expert Exchange site.  All of the topics areas will look like this page with different content and maybe some small differences in the positioning of the content areas that we'll call "blocks".  The layout of the page is the "Template".  The template may or may not have generalized or global content, (like a logo), navigation, (like the tabs) or functionality, (like the My Account link or the date).

You'll notice content blocks at different positions on the page dependant on what mode your in, either expert mode or non expert mode, depending on your preferences.  There are "Quick Links" that will have your technology channels that you've selected and a list of the Top 15 Overall, Featured Expert, Top 15 Yearly and so forth.

These content blocks are the library items.  Library items are small content, navigational or functionality areas that can be put on your template at desired locations.  You can have them at certain locations for your general users, while for your registered users, you may have them in different locations of you may have additional content blocks or llibrary items that general users wouldn't see.

So, to put things in a nut shell just remember, templates are layout, while library items are content.
