IIS metabase backup / restore ?

Recently my IIS crashed and it won't restart giving the following error :-
The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated with service-specific error 2147500034 (0x80004002)

Upon research i found that this error can be caused by a corrupt metabase. So i had to re-install Windows 2003 in order to get IIS working again.

I would like to avoid this situation in the future and I was wondering if I can keep a backup of the metabase on a CD, and the next time IIS crashed i simply restore the metabase from the CD. But i'm not sure how to go about backing up the IIS metabase, what files to backup, and then how to restore.

Please help.

However, you should know that Backup/Restore will not work if you have to reinstall the OS.
