Cannot delete a file in Explorer

For some reason unknown I cannot delete files or directories in Windows Explorer or any Explorer like product.  I CAN delete files and remove directories when I exit to the Command prompt.  Any thought about what this might be?

I should add that I get a dialog box error message that reads as follows:  "Cannot delete <filename>:  The directory or file cannot be created."  And of course, I'm not trying to create it.  I'm trying to delete it.

It depends if the files are in use or not or the type of file (do windows need it or no).

I'm not using the files in question when I try to delete them.

have you tried to delete that file going to safe mode ?

may be it is being used by virus or spyware (just to be on the safer side , scan for virus and spywares)

Can you give us more details of your setup?

What operating system are you using?
Are you running any Antivirus or any type of security program?
What size hard-Disk are you using and how FULL is it!

"It might be that in windows/explorer when you delete a file it tries to MOVE it to the recycle bin and this could be the stage at which it FAILS TO CREATE the file i.e in the recycle bin!! However if you go into dos prompt to delete windows does not try to put the file in the recycle bin it just deletes it"

I'm running WindowsXP and running Norton AntiVirus and NORTON PROTECTED RECYCLE BIN.  My hard drive has plenty of space.

BUT I made sure that there were NO files in the 2 recycle bins (the windows recycle bin and the Norton Protected Recycle Bin) and doing THAT enabled me to delete files within Explorer.

So, your lead put on the trail to a solution and you get the points!  Thanks so much.

I'm not sure what setting I must have had wrong or what was wrong but now that I know what to look for....

Thanks again.
