Hi aot,

There are several ways to produce that effect.

One way is by creating a New Layer directly on top of the one containing the photo. Select the shape you want to make lighter and go to Edit>Fill and select White. Now, making sure that your new Layer is still active, first click on the Mode drop down in the Layers menu (the default setting is Normal) and change it to Overlay; and under Opacity move the slider down to the left until you are comfortable with the result.

Another way, a bit more invasive, involves Curves. Make a copy of the layer that contains the photo by right-clicking on it in the Layers palette and selecting Duplicate Layer. Make the original Layer invisible. This is not necessary but it's always a good idea to have a backup or your original image in case you need it later. With the Duplicate Layer active, use the Rectangle tool to select the area you want to lighten. Now go to Image>Adjustments>Curves (Ctrl-M). In the Dialog that you'll see, click on the upper end of the diagonal and slide it to the left so that the Input number decreases while the Output number remains at 255. When you achieve an acceptable level of lightness hit OK.

Good Vibes!

Thanks Aot. Glad to be of help.
