You can submit your website to Google, but it won't do you much good.  Google (and other search engines) prefer to find your site though backlinks (incoming links from other sites).  These are considered a significant indicator of the importance of your site and there is a very good chance that without any, the search engines will simply ignore your site, even if you submit it.

Here's what Google says (source - www.google.com/intl/en/webmasters/1.html#A2):
"We add thousands of new sites to our index each time we crawl the Web, but if you like, you may submit your URL as well. Submission is not necessary and does not guarantee inclusion in our index. Given the large number of sites submitting URLs, it's likely your pages will be found in an automatic crawl before they make it into our index through the URL submission form. We DO NOT add all submitted URLs to our index, and cannot predict when or if they will appear
     . . .
The best way to ensure Google finds your site is for your page to be linked from lots of pages on other sites. Google's robots jump from page to page on the Web via hyperlinks, so the more sites that link to you, the more likely it is that we'll find you quickly."

There are many tricks to follow if you want to score high in the search engines. There is however, no guarantee that you will score well in the search engines.

There are rules to follow and one of the most important ones is link popularity. This is however, mostly out of your hands. The more important sites link to yours directly from the frontpage, the better your site will be ranked in google. What also works is from the keywords you define in the meta keywords, place the most important ones in your text of the page. As a general rule, try to have them appear between 3 to 7 times for each 100 words. Sounds easy right..well it's not. Combined keywords are stronger, so if you can manage to put two or more together in your text, the search engine thinks they are more important.

Also make sure to put alt texts in your images, make sure they are descriptive so the search engine can use them to find your site. All content should  help in the finding using your keywords and search engines do not penalize you for using keywords in your alt texts.

There are way more rules to think of, but it's a start.
Regards,
Max.

Not inherently, but you want all of your content, including your alt text, to be natural.  If you stuff your image alt tags with keywords that have nothing to do with the image they are supposed to represent, you may be penalized for keyword spamming.

True humeniuk, I should have said that you should apply the same general rules for your alt texts eventhough you might not be penalized, it's never wrong to be prepared.. ;)

Max.

Yes, perhaps that's a better way to put it, that the general rule of keeping things natural applies to all aspects of your content optmization.  Good point :)
