there are few ways doing it :

1) GET a USB cdrom, and boot from it. if your Laptop does not support boot from usb devices,
download Windows XP floppy Bootdisks from www.bootdisk.com and boot from the floppy drive while the usb is
connected, the setup will continue from the cdrom .

2)remove the Harddisk from the Laptop and put it in External USB case, connect it to a computer, and create a fat32 bootable
partion and another ntfs partiotion. copy the i386 folder from the cdrom to the fat32 partition
put the harddisk back in the laptop and boot, after dos is up , run winnt or winnt32 (depend on your OS TYPE) from the I386
folder and install the XP on the NTFS Partition

3)put the harddisk on the SAME Laptop (other one) install the XP and then move the Hardisk back to your laptop

Good Luck

It's possible to install Windows without a CD.

The simplest way is to copy the contents of the Windows CD on another PC into a directory, then share this directory over the network and copy the contents to your notebook.

You have to make sure that your harddisk has at least two partitions. Copy the contents to the second partition (in case you want to install XP on the first partition). To make it easier, format the second partition with FAT32 and not NTFS.

After this boot from a DOS disk. (for example this one: http://www.startdisk.com/Web1/ubd/ubd.htm)
Navigate to the second partition on the command prompt and start the setup...

But...
I think the easiest way would be to connect an USB-CDROM-drive and install from there... :)

The CD-roms on Compaq notebooks have unique drivers.  If you'd like to try to get yours working again, try here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&cc=mx&dlc=es&product=235647

Enter to the BIOS, and check if you can boot from the external Cdrom
(you can find it as removable devices or usb devices)

if not, download Windows XP floppy Bootdisks from www.bootdisk.com and boot from the floppy drive while the usb is
connected, the setup will continue from the cdrom .

strange,
if you plug this cdrom into a different windows xp computer and it recognize it
then your 5 floppy boot disks should also identify the cdrom and continue the boot from the cdrom CD
after you finish to boot the 5 floppies

I finished boot setup with 6 windows xp floppies, and then it asks to insert windows xp installation cd into cd-rom, but it only tries to read from built in cd-rom, which doesnt work, and dont try to read from external one
