Windows 2003 DFS

In our shop we admin member servers of an AD domain.  I want to start using DFS for my server access.  I also want to be able to use the replication feature DFS offers.  Can I do that without domain server access?

You can set up DFS intependantly of the domain, although you will still need access to the shares/files to which it points.

Does that include replication also?  I have DFS running now but haven't tested replication.  I ask becuase i was told for replication the DFS root needs to reside on the domain server.  Just checking this statement.
