Search function crashes explorer.exe on Win 2k3 Server Enterprise Edition

When I try and conduct a search on my Win2k3 server, Explorer.exe crashes. It writes 2 events to the Application log which I've listed below:

1. Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.3790.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

2. The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

I'm not sure when this started but I have over time installed 22 hotfixes for Win2k3 server.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Gordon

Hi ingallg,
Have you installed Service Pack 1?

While your issue isn't specifically mentioned (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824721)
The service packs will clean up all your patches and should make things better.

Be sure to read the deployment guidelines first though.

Good Luck!

We are testing SP1 on test servers but have not rolled it out to production servers yet.
SP1 is the next step but I was hoping to come across a fix in the short term to address this
particular issue.

Thank you

Well, here's a couple of suggestions...

If you have any of these installed: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.mspx
Uninstall them and reinstall.

Also, remove Adobe Acrobat Reader and all Java updates.  Reinstall Java using J2SE Runtime 5.0.  Reinstall Reader using 7.0.

Some or all of that is good anyhow... so give it a try.

Thanks for the feedback. Performing cleanup on the server this weekend.
Will let you know how it turns out.

The cleanup helped resolve the issue. Also, a test server that had the same problem was resolved by renaming Explorer.exe and when I rebooted the server it recreates explorer.exe and that fixed the issue as well.

I wasn't willing to make that change on my production server however.

Thank you

Gordon
I had the same issue and was running McAfee VirusScan 8.0i.  I found upgrading to 8.5i fixed the issue.
