Line 0 of hivesys.inf is corrupted. setup cannot continue.


This is the error msg im getting when i was trying to reinstall (clean) windows xp on my DELL inspiron 8600
Any help would be greately appriciated

Does this happen while the data is being copied from the CD to disk? Try cleaning your CD with a soft cloth, also try the same the CD drive's lense. If that doesn't help, try another CD or make a backup copy of the one you have using another PC, then try using the backup copy. Also download memtest86 http://memtest.org and test the ram of your notebook. If you don't get errors during the first pass, let it do at least 5 passes.

Are u sure ur CD Drive is fine?? Can it start booting some other CD? It looks like the CD is bad. SOmetimes Recorded CD's look fine but can be corrupted. Try loading from another CD. Try setting up another OS and see if it works. You can always cancel the setup or remove it.

Is ur system getting Hot? Check the tempreatures from the BIOS, hitting F10 or F1 or F2 shud get u into the BIOS setup.

yes it does happen during that . i have tested all the components of the laptop using dell diagnostics utility ,everyting seems to be ok. i think i ll try loading differnt OS and see if it works.

sorry first i tried loading with dell CD (operating System) and it freezes on the windows setup screen. and then i tried other CD and it  gives that error message

Have you tested the £RAM with memtest? If it isn't a bad drive or CD, this behaviour is often caused by bad RAM. Possibly the dell diagnostics to test as good as memtest...
