Hello,

What are the different methods of moving/updating a domain controller to new hardware ?
There are 2 DCs in the environment.
Would like to upgrade both to better machines, and keep their names.

1 server has all 5 roles, both are global catalogs

Thank you for your time.

Run DCpromo.EXE on the machine without the roles and follow the prompts to remove AD.
Rebuild this server.

DCPromo newly built server and transfer the roles

Do the same to second server.

Make sure all DCs are global catalogs at each stage.

Make sure you transfer primary DNS (if you aren't AD integrated) and any other services like DHCP that typically reside on servers. Check your DHCP settings are not giving out DNS settings for a server that is being rebuilt.

Cheers

Hi James,
Thanks for the response.

So..I demote the DC that does not have any roles then I run DCPromo on the new machine.
At this point can I name the new machine the same name as the one that was just demoted ?

Demote the non-role holder and rebuild, then promote
Transfer the roles
Demote the current role-holder and rebuild then promote

You can re-use the old names ONLY if the DCPromo was successful to demote (it usually is). You may have to delete the old machine names by hand from the AD Sites and Services tool before rebuilding.
