Bios password on Ibm Thinkpad R40 2681

When I turn it on , it goes straight to a black screen asking for a password, It doesn't even go to the windows page, just a black screen.

Any idea on how to crack that password or reset it.

If its the system password, you will need to find a source (ebay for example) for the bios chip.  A friend of mine had a thinkpad that he bought that had the password on as well.  He had to buy the chip and I desoldered the old chip and soldered the new chip in place of it.  It works fine now.

However I had to compeltely strip the laptop to gain access to the chip and on top of that, the chip was extremely tiny (1 cm or so in size) and had 8 solder lugs which I ended up using a magnifying glass to solder with.

The chip was i think around 90 dollars.

Search ebay for thinkpad bios chips

Hi TerenceC,

Terence, I am not aware of any easy way to do this. It is recomended you send your system to IBM however thier are lots of 3rd party companies that specialize in this type of service.
It's not free but you can find help here. http://www.nortek.on.ca/hdd_pw.html

Wish I had better news for you.

God Bless
