I am not a PIC expert, but I found this:

"   I'm embarking on a PIC to 'SPI controlled 16 bit A/D' project and am
interested in this book for the SPI (& 12C for that matter) info.
I'm using an expensive but nice AD7705 to get the resolution I need, because
a 16F877 10Bit was not good enough in practice, hence my need for SPI info..... "
