XP Scandisk hangs during chkdsk at 9%
Ran Dell diagnostics and it indicated that there were several drive errors of the following 2 types:
Result Code Block Desc
0f00-1344 21332171 Uncorrectable data error or media is write protected
0f00-1342 21332172 address not found
Note: Dell drives have a small non-dos partition, but I have never seen this cause a scan disk issue.
Is this recoverable... or is the drive trash?
Other info:
I got to this stage because I could not boot normally - black screen after windows logo
I could not boot into safe mode: hang after reaching file name apg440
I coudl not boot into vga mode: black screen
Saw the threads on apg440 (not encouraging) but also found that if I booted into safe mode and let the machine sit for 2 hours I could finally get a partial screen... reach the RUN window and invoke System Recovery. This got me bootable again, but I was concerned and ran full diagnostics... this is where I got the disk error messages and attempted to fix with scandisk.

if you can get your hands on Diskeeper 9 (free trial)
http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp
- then set a boot time defragmentation with
disc repair options .Works miracles!

I have a Ghost image as well that I created after everything was installed and "pristine"... I tried to boot with the system recovery disk... that would not work either.
So the drive is messed up, but the issue is, is it physically damaged or just confused.
I used the Windows XP install disk, removed the partition, reinstalled the partition and then reinstalled Windows. That went fine.
I then ran scan disk.... that reported no errors.
I loaded the Dell diagnostics and did a full test of the drive section... that also reported no errors.
So the drive is physically fine...
I am going to reload the Ghost image, and run scandisk and dell diagnostics again. The problems started when I installed a new video driver... which was after the Ghost image was created. Hopefully, that post Ghost change was the issue.
Will find out shortly if I will be "very happy" or "not happy" or words to that effect that I can't use here.
