RE: How difficult to change CMOS battery.

The computer is a custom built desktop.  It has an Intel PD440FX mainboard (PII 233MHz - 6 years old).  I have added memory recently and after working good a few days, I received a 'CMOS checksum Error' that reset some of the BIOS settings back to default settings.

I figure a weak battery caused this.  I haven't looked yet - is this an easy battery to change or should I take it to a technician?  I am trying to upgrade it to give to my daughter (she has no computer and no money to buy one).

It is rediculously simple - you locate it on the motherboard, push the coin-sized object out of the holder, and insert a new one in.  A small metal clip is usually what holds it in.  But some people don't have the skill to boil water, so it may be a relative thing.

Quite easy. A small tab should pop the battery out.
Go purchase a replacement
Slip it right on in.. .just remember which way is up ;-)

The physical part is simple, as has been stated above. If you have the checksum error, you may want to make sure the CMOS is properly reset, which means you remove the old battery and wait 30+ minute before inserting the new one, or perform a CMOS reset using the appropriate jumpers, before you restore your BIOS settings. Just a thought.
