I recently installed SP1 for Server 2003.  When I try to open the windows firewall I receive the message "Windows Firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys)".  Does anyone know what the other program would be, or how to fix it?  I thought maybe it was the 'Security Configuration Wizard', but after uninstalling it I still receive the message.

RRAS probably has a hold of it.  Try stopping the RRAS service and see if you can then start the firewall.

What does it mean to be "Always On"?

Is your cloud always on? With an Always On cloud you won't have to worry about downtime for maintenance or software application code updates, ensuring that your bottom line isn't affected.

You should also make sure your PC is fully updated. I know the following article is windows XP ... but it should also apply to your edition of windows ...

UICE - Windows 2003 SP1 was *just released* - it's brand new - no other updates for Windows 2003 Server are out there.

What CRNP should do is go to the Microsoft Windows 2003 SP1 official site.  It offers all kinds of info about SP1.

are you running rras on the server? quoted from http://www.howotnetworking.com,  Troubleshooting Windows Server2003 SP1 Issues - case study

Can't enable windows Firewall on a RRAS server - Windows firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys)
Situation: one of our clients could not get the windows Firewall to work. Whenever they tried to start the Windows Firewall, they received the following message: "Windows firewall cannot run because another program or service is running that might use the network address translation component (Ipnat.sys).

What they tried:

They event tried to stop the RRAS but got the same result. They finally mame it work by disabling the RRAS.

Recommendation: It is not recommended to use Windows Firewall on a RRAS server.

Sorry, I've been out of the office.

Response to UICE:  I have no other software firewall installed on the server.  I do also have it completely upto date (probably why there's problems!)

Response to ZabagaR:  The site is helpful, but I can't find anything about this

Response to blin2000: I went into services and stopped the Routing and Remote Access, but I still received the message.  Is there more to disabling it?

Can you use the utility "Handle v3.01" to examine what else has a hold of "ipnat.sys" ?

since the RRAS was running, you must have a reason to run it. If you use the server as a router, to protect your LAN, you should enable NAT. If the RRAS is for VPN, you should have another firewall. If you do want to enable windows firewaal and don't use the RRAS, you should disable (no stop) it. Yu may need to restart the server aftre making the change.
