RUNDLL32 ERROR

RUNDLL32 caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL and the details go on.  I am trying to install 98 SE. I am doing this so I can install all the updates and then use norton ghost to make an image.  I get this error at the system configuration part of the installation.  I have removed all PCI cards except the video card.  computer is old, but it runs and I only use it for this reason. Computer installs and runs 2000 pro just fine.  PR 166 processor with 98 MB of memory.

This is the only MSKB article with that error during setup that I have found so far:

That doesn't seem to be the same error that I am having.  I've used this disk on this computer several times.  Not sure what it is at this point.

Hello Bagged2drag

The Rundll32 loads and runs 32-bit DLLs. If you pass the wrong type of DLL to Rundll
or Rundll32, it may fail to run without indicating any error messages.

My advice for your problem is trying to delete the virtual memory file and try to recreate it.
Make it as recommanded.

If you don't know whats virtual memory then i will explain it, " Virtual memory is harddisk space reserved to be used as "memory". This is the slowest way to read and write to memory, and this is usually used when you don't have enough space of Physical memory.

For more details about it the kernel problem, have a look at this link below.
http://www.techadvice.com/issues/issues-with.asp?with1=Using&word2=Kernel32

Also have a look at this thread, which talk about the memory, how to increase it and whats the best software.
http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win98/Q_20048066.html

Maybe adding more ram will make things better, but if you don't then try to do what i told you and try to recreate the Virtual memory file.

Good Luck

i suggest testing the ram first with memtest86+ from :     http://www.memtest.org/
Then, i would clean the  windows cd, the cd drive lens, or make a copy of the cd (it can be bad) and try the copy

I'll look into all of that.  The system has 98 MB of memory, I have 64 more to put in, but it won't work due to differences in parity.  I recopied the cd, same thing.  I think its funny that the computer runs 2000 pro just fine.  98 se should be a lot easier on the system.

try deleting the virtual memory because the file possibly damaged?
recreate it after you download it.

Good luck
