Using different software for the 4070 Photosmart scanner

I made a huge mistake.  My scanner died and I bought an HP Scanjet 4070 Photosmart scanner.  I think the hardware is ok, but the software is the worst stuff I have ever used.  I want to be able to somehow use my PrecisionScan Pro software from my ScanJet 5370.  I like HP's hardware, but they keep doing stuff like this with their software.

Anyway to make it work??

The PrecisionScan Pro is HP's "Pro" level scanning software. The 4070, as a home/home office product, doesn't rate the "Pro" software, so it isn't supported. Just out of curiousity, what happens when you try to use it? Make sure your new scanner is set as the appropriate twain device to use. And report back what happens, please!

You might also want to consider some alternative scanning software. Here's a list from About.com: http://graphicssoft.about.com/od/scanningsoftware/

Take a look at Infothek Scan and Silverfast from that from that list. Don't know if they will work with your scanner, but you can demo them (in fact, before you can buy Silverfast, you have to indicate that you HAVE demo-ed it - a refreshing approach).

One from the list that won't work is VueScan, here's what they say:
Unsupported scanners:
    * HP ScanJet models 3300, 3400, 3500, 3970, 4070, 4200, 4300, 4400, 4500, 4600, 5400, 5500
 [others deleted]
    * These scanners aren't supported because the vendor won't document the commands they use, and these commands are too complex to reverse-engineer.
