When I started up my very new  Mac Mini this a.m. (switched off overnight), the desktop,
which normally has one single icon for the hard drive, (Mackintosh HD), now
has three more !   These are labelled       "Network",         ".DS_store",
and         "Servers"

The Mac is connected to a router for broadband internet access.

What is the problem, and how to fix please ?

It sounds like the Finder is showing hidden files.
Launch /Applications/Utilities/ and enter the command:
     defaults read AppleShowAllFiles

The value '0' (zero, or possibly 'false') should be returned.  If not,
you can reset the flag by issuing the following command:

     defaults write AppleShowAllFiles 0

You will have to log out then log in again for the change to take effect.

If you are not comfortable using, you can use the 3rd party GUI app TinkerTool
to make the change.  Launch TinkerTool, click on the Finder icon on its shelf, then
uncheck "Show hidden and system files" in the "Finder preferences:" section of the inspector.
Click the "Relaunch Finder" button in the lower right corner of the window for the changes
    to take effect.

Of course the real question is how the flag got set in the first place?
