this reasult is shown in a datagrid with update and cancel commands here is the code:

Hi noor,
In ur  last post I had asked for the entire code and u did not post it .. then how can you expect us to follow up if you urself does not answer the questions asked .. Anyway
one thing I noticed here is that the parameters and the assignment of values are not in the exact same order .. i think that is necessary in the case of paramaterized queries .. so change ur code to
        strUpdateStmt =" UPDATE surge_vessel_operation_data SET" & _
        " time_stamp = @EmpID, availability =@Lname, cause_of_non_availability =

@Title " & _
        " WHERE surge_vessel_id =@Fname"
     conn = New SqlConnection(strConn)
     MyCommand = New SqlCommand(strUpdateStmt, conn)
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@EmpID", strDateValue.Text ))
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@Lname", txtLastName.text))
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@Title", txtTitle.text))
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@Fname", txtFirstName.text))
     conn.Open()

I would really advice you to have a look at the way the variables have been named .. too confusing .. u have a different header for the field, the same field has a different name as varaible updating something else in the database ...

------------------------------------------------------------------
when i tried the aboe code it gave me this error:specified cast is not valid
coz i know the first cell is consiederd (0) but it is for the edit column

so i tried this:
Dim surgeid As textbox = E.Item.cells(1).Controls(0)
      dim strDateValue as textbox=E.Item.cells(2).controls(0)
      Dim avai As textbox = E.Item.cells(3).Controls(0)
      Dim causeavai As textbox = E.Item.cells(4).Controls(0)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
but it gave me this error message:Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: index

so this is the full details that i can provide and there is nothing else ,i tried to explain it in a full way.

am sorry if i sounded angry ..

Which line gave the error?? could u post the entire error statement?

Also could u try changing the order of the parameters as i suggested ..
      strUpdateStmt =" UPDATE surge_vessel_operation_data SET  time_stamp = @timest, availability =@available, cause_of_non_availability = @causeavailable  WHERE surge_vessel_id =@surge"
     conn = New SqlConnection(strConn)
     MyCommand = New SqlCommand(strUpdateStmt, conn)
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@timest", strDateValue.Text ))
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@available", avai.text))
     MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@causeavailable", causeavai.text))      MyCommand.Parameters.Add(New SQLParameter("@surge", surgeid.text))
