I've been asked to upgrade our mail and smtp servers to R6.5.1 from R5.07 and R5.12 respectively.

Until some applications become redundant on what will should and soon will be our dedicated mail server, (Which insidently is also the Administrative Server for the Domain) I can only upgrade the SMTP server.

Has any one only upgraded there SMTP server to gain all the improved anti spam control? If so were there any problems encountered or is there anything I should take into account/be aware of.#

Thanking you in advance

Yep, had the SMTP server at 6.5.1 for about 4 months before upgrading the rest of the servers. You do need to upgrade the address book, so be careful of any design changes you have made to the Directory, you will need to redo them. The IBM redbook is really useful Upgrading to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks.nsf/RedbookAbstracts/sg246889.html. Put the new anti spam features to good use. In particular hacked the directory to create some different rules, see http://www.dominopower.com/issues/issue200312/00001158001.html. Be aware that rules will cause mail to slow down, and if you use an anti-virus program that sets the mail to held, using a rule that sets mail to held may be ineffective.

Only problem I had was with one upgrade where a certifier was effected, so make sure you have copies of all certifiers, server ids, admin ids, notes.ini and names.nsf.

R6 Upgrade checklist reminders eg: delete names.nsf .ft index- link about this: http://www.chc-3.com/downloads.htm

Thanks jjpaton

When you say upgrade the address book, you mean the address book on the SMTP server right??

yes, the server address book (AKA Domino Directory), which will then replicate to all your other servers. That reminds me - you are meant to upgrade the Administration server of the Domino Directory first - so check if that is your SMTP server, if not you may need to consider changing it to be the admin server of the Directory. Of course if your SMTP server is set up with it's own Domain and has a different Directory that's all a moot point.
