Keyboard/login oddity

On one of my workstations here at work (Windowss 2000 SP4- al SP's and Updates installed) I have been having some intermittent problems during the login process. When typing in username, after I type the fourth letter (lets say in an 8 character username), the cursor goes back to the beggining of the line, and all the characters that I have typed so far are highlighted. After a reboot I am able to login with no problem, but I want to fix this so we don't have to reboot everytime we login to that worstation. I do not think it is hardware realted (nothing in the event viewer/device manager about any keyboard problems) but I did find these 2 errors at the same time this happened.

What do you think the problem could be here?

I've seen weird stuff with keyboards before, normally on server units with KVMs fitted.  If this fits your scenario, the fix we used was to just individually tap the CTRL ALT and SHIFT keys on both sides of the keyboard a few times, and then enter the passwords.

Another indication was to go back to the Username field (not the password, as this is shown in *, of course), and to re-enter the username up there, AND then the password - all on the same line - hence visible in plain text.  This could be confirmed to be correct, and then Cut and Pasted into the password field below.

It seemed as though the servers were trapping that one of these keys was held down (even though they weren't) , and hence they produced garbage, all kinds of accented non-english characters, etc.  long shot, but it just might work!

That's a curious comment.  Care to elucidate?
