Asset Tracking application

I am looking for an application to track assets that are fielded at many remote locations.  Each location has a PC, monitor, Printer and BACKUPS.  There is no network connectivity to these workstations.  I just need something that will track manufacturer, Model, Serial Number, in house stock number, add some comments about the item, and know where it is.  Then be able to pull up reports about everything that is located at a particular location.

I would also like the software to be able handle trouble report tracking for these items.

A big plus would be web browser interface to the data.

Intuit has a solution but it does way more than I need and costs $5000, the budget is $1000.

Any suggestions.

Hi,

You could design a custom app in Access to do this.

I would also recomend Microsoft Access.
It would be quick and easy to set up.
The software would cost less than $1000. Probably $450 for Access alone or about $750 for the Office pro suite.
I'm not sure if the newest version of access would provide a web interface or not but it would do the trick for everything else including any reports you might want to print..
If you want a web interface you can always add it later through an asp web app that uses your access database.
I'm in the process of building one myself.
If you want some pointers on getting set up just post back here and i can help you out.

If you're after access pointers just post here, (unless you're just after buying a pre-tailored package).

You can always use an Excel spreadsheet. Save it as a webpage and toss it on your webserver.

Been busy on other tasks.  I would really like to get away from access.  Access was good when everyone was in the same office but now I have two offices comming in via VPN over ADSL and it is painful to use MS ACCESS over that VPN.

I like the product from Intuit but the boss says that $5K is too much.

What about SQL server?  I began looking into converting the DB to SQL and got a book on SQL server started reading and got an headach and quit.

I did take a course in SQL several years ago and remember some.

1.  If I install SQL server on a machine then how hard is it to convert the ACCESS tables to be accessable through SQL server?

2.  How hard is it to create an HTML front end to access the data and generate reports etc?

Hi,

this link may help:- http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/sql/2000/all/reskit/en-us/part2/c0561.mspx

As far as the html frontend is concerned, it really depends on how complex you need it to be.

If you need any help on this I'll be happy to help.

Thanks

IT Commander is fabulous!

I downloaded it on a whim a while back, now we are evaluating implementing in within our network.   Nice solid web-based system that has almost everything an IT PRO could want for data management.

Now that I'm done sounding like an advertisement, you could also try this:

Remote System Information: http://www.digitallabs.net/rsi/

Scans by IP, IP Range or Domain/Workgroup.  Customizable and will pull data out of lan-attached systems that you wouldn't think possible.

Decided to keep the MS Access database and use ASP to access the data.  I have a SQL book and have typed out the example that utilizes the Northwind DB but it does not seem to work.  I have the Northwind DP and the ASP page on a 2003 server with IIS enabled.

Is there somewhere that I can D/L a working example of ASP for the MS Northwind DB?

I don't know of any links off hand that use the Northwind DB.
Access 2003 has everything in it that you need to make web page that let you view or change your data however you want. I just got access 2003 last week so I won't be too much help with that part of it. There are wizards to help as well.
I use VB6 to write my asp application. The data environment lets me connect to any data base and not just .mdb.
What are you going to use?

One point, I had to package my application and install it as an application directly on the server for it to work. Simply publishing the pages to the server and putting the database on the server didn't work.

Forgot to enable ASP pages on the 2003 server.  ASP pages now working.  Now to go about converting DB queries to ASP pages.
