Creating a searchable database on my site ??

Okay, here's the thing. I am a self taught web builder. I build only sites for my use and reverse engineering and scouring through the net for cool sites can only take one so far. Now I need help to create a searchable database on my site.

I am very familiar with MS Excel 2003, but not Access. If there's a way to manipulate my (new) database with information on my Excel spreadsheets, all the better for me.

So I need to know how to make a searchable database.

My site is a real estate site. I want to offer visitors to my site, the ability to type in their address and click "search" to find out their market value according to info on my database. How?

You can use Access fo this. It's pretty simple to use. You can import all the data from your excel sheet to your Access database. Also you can get additional information on how to use access from net also,

Hmm, interesting. But that is not really what I need major help on. I can work with Access to a degree, and I know I can learn it, but I think you'd agree that I need help with making my web site talk with the Access database, no?

It's one thing to put all the info on Access, but then what? How does my site read the database and then present a new page with the property's value? That's the part I do not know.

you can easily do that using either java or .NET. From any front-end web application you can connect to the Access DB.

the problem tht u seem to have it tht ur website is static to a degree atm..u need to use some sort of server-side scripting and any web programming language will let u develop web apps tht talk to databases and display information manipulated according to the users / visitors actions...

there are a few web app programming languages flying around..php is free to use and may be suitable for ur needs..coldfusion is easy to use and offers a lot of integration and manipulation tools specially if u go for cf mx server .. java(jsp) or .net as suggested above by sujit_kumar are others tht are popular ..each language has its pros and cons and offer the best possible solution in different scenarios..u just have to weigh the merits and disadvantages to decide wht u wud like to use and wht is feasible/economical etc for u to use.. a search online to look up more info and possibly a comparision of the most popular web programming languages is prolly the way to go..

there are several tutorials available online to familiarize urself with the language of ur choice..there are some great books available on most of the languages used..also programmers tend to develop solid community support which is also accessible online..

    hope this helps..
