Why are so many abandoned questions?

OK! Can somebody please tell me why so many people don't close their questions? huh? I mean, they ask, they get answers. DuDe!? just close the question and give the points. That's the main reason people answer the questions...it's for the points. But what do people do? They assign 500 points to their questions, then they don't close them! I'm actually sick and tired of people not closing questions after they have been helped! DARN! even if I don't get the points, at least have the decency to close the question with a "Sorry, but nobody helped me here." or "I got the answer somewhere else" I think that people deliberately assign 500 points to their questions, just so that they get a prompt reply. Then they abandon the question and get the points refunded. These people should be banned! as far as I'm concerned. Not only do they waste the time of the people who answer the questions, but they also waste the time of the moderators. May I be so bold as to suggest the following, OK, I'm no great programmer but I will award 500 points and an A grade if somebody could write a script for the site to check abandoned questions, and if there is only 1 person answering the question then award him/her the points, if there is more than 1 person involved in answering the question the forward the abandoned question to the moderators. Having so many abandoned questions doesn't make me want to answer anymore questions.

Your Sincerely,
Cheesed off wannabe expert!

>>That's the main reason people answer the questions...it's for the points

Not so - most Experts come her to help and learn some new stuff

>>They assign 500 points to their questions, then they don't close them!

500 pointers are usually posted by paying members who think they can do what they like cause they paid to be here :(

>>I'm actually sick and tired of people not closing questions after they have been helped

LOL - get used to it in 3 months time you will get a tricke of points from the unsung heros of Experts-Exchange the cleanup volenteers who really are the people who have a right to get "cheesed off" cause the only deal with abandoned Q's

>> I think that people deliberately assign 500 points to their questions, just so that they get a prompt reply

In the past Yes - Experts getting free PS accounts were the worst offenders - but now is the Paying members - every question they ask is for 500 pts cause they get unlimites points whats the point of asking a question for less.

>>but I will award 500 points and an A grade if somebody could write a script for the site to check abandoned questions

Dan allready worte one - it was called the cleanup ping - but its been retired now

>> Having so many abandoned questions doesn't make me want to answer anymore questions.

Im sorry to hear that, Posters are people - and like the general populus some are goog guys/gals and some are tossers - assume everyone is a nice guy/gal till they prove otherwise and the way you are treated by the rest of the community here will be much more positive.

Best Wishes

Pete

People are busy. Usually ask a question in a few places and only every so often come back to EE to check mine and close them off.

Incidentally I've had people complain about giving less than 500 and also about giving anything other than an excellent grade. Even though they didn't answer the question to my satisfaction. Or they answered a question that was asked, and expect to rewarded for posting in reply to anything.

Though in general I find that EE has a higher quality of responses compared to other forums. Expsecially in the software side of things.

Will,

Speaking for myself if you will post that you feel that you gave a good answer in response to my ping the asker shouldn't be getting a refund.  If you'll let me know in the next question this happens in I'de appreciate it.

Cheesed off wannabe expert,

You are aware that questions are only officialy classified as abandond at > 21 days right?  If your reffering to something like http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/Q_21366125.html#13687967 the idea never really took off but that script is created and operated by me.

Pete,

I think cleanup ping is alive and well being operated by Dan under his account in his areas.  It was retired sitewide for reasons that I don't know :-(.

Thanks for the Info PeteLong. Pretty much what I was thinking all along.

Sparky191, you're right about some of the answers, I personally try not answer a question if somebody has already given the answer that I was gonna give...unless I see that there is a good answer and still some confusion/debate, then I will participate.

WillHudson....You know what I mean.

mugman21, if the people who post the question are not happy with the answer then they should at least say so.

The value of this site will seriously take a nosedive if that is the attitude of the people who post here.

I've only been on EE since late last year, but I've used it in the past as an unsubscribed user, and the quality of the answers are more often than not very excellent. My fear/concern/worry/pet peeve is that when people don't close questions, even if they are not happy with the answer...how will we know that they are not happy with the answer unless they post back and say so. Just take look at some of the experts in the hall of fame....They don't bother replying much....why? Probably a couple of reason, but I'll put my head on the block and say that abondoned questions are one of those reasons.

P.S. PeteLong, I'm not only here for the points, I like helping people 2. I've also looked at some of the grades given to some of the questions, and people really expect to be spoon-fed the answers. Sometimes you can't do anything more than to point a person in the right direction. But that's a topic for another post..... :)

Let me just say thanks to you guys for taking the time to post here. I guess there is not wrong/right answer, just common decency for all concerned, especially the experts who started this site for the great forsight in wanting to help us people, be you an Expert or a Newbie or anything inbetween.

Turn123, don't get me wrong, I'm not directing any of this at the moderators, without you guys, there would be even more abandoned questions. You guys do a GREAT job. I like your script, very accomodating, maybe even too accomodating. As a followup to that script, I'd suggest there should be another script after the abondoned period has expired that could possibly force an accept where there is only 1 person answering the post. Sometimes it's better to people to feel in order to learn. If questions are force accepted then people would either start closing questions where appropriate or they wouldn't post with max points. They'd be too scared of loosing their points. But I also know that you cannot accommodate for everybody's whim and whinging.

I agree,

If people are not happy with the answer they should say so, I think some people leave the question open waiting for perhaps a more clear or better answer.

I do believe some people that post questions here have ADD or perhaps Alzheimer's disease.

I'm only here to get answers. If I spot a question in passing that I can answer easily then I'll contribute. But I don't trawl others questions very often. I simply don't have the time. Thats why I subscribe. I can only imagine the Experts are even busier people than I. They also probably are more interested in new questions and unusual questions that they've not seen before. Asnwering the same questions over is boring.

Once, I responded to a question. Later when I checked the history of the asker, I saw that he/she had *never* closed any of their open questions. I posted to CS, they contacted this user, and in a short time, this user came back and closed their open Qs. In this case, I think it was a newer user who just didn't know how to or that they were supposed to follow certain steps to officially close a question. However, I agree, there are way too many abandoned questions.

Yeah... that's even what 500 points is for,...

A difficult or urgent question..

But being a paid member, having a shitload of points, or whatever reason is not good enough to exhibit bad manners.
Close a question or bugger off. But that's just me.

I agree with that, as there have been a few questions where people have left it open where I have posted some good suggestions :(

I think from now on I am going to avoid the windows 2000 TA just until they sort out clean up volunteers for that area because I know that the windows 2000 is short handed with regards to clean up volunteers !! I already gave a good answer to one of the questions in there and I am still awaiting either a reply from the asker, a reply from any admin within the question to suggest it is abandoned or better yet a forced accept considering my suggestion seems to be a pretty good one !! Hint hint lol :-"

Unless you have unsubscribed, you get the cleanup email.  It has been my experience that if you state your comment is the answer or should have helped, then you will get the points.  Cleanup is a difficult task and unless they are very familiar with the subject it can be difficult to read all the comments and pick an answer.

P.S. If I abandon a question and the points gets refunded....does it get added to the points that I have accumulated for the month?
