I have a series of questions running through my head about Windows Server 2003 backup...

1.  It sounds like the backup utility is fine for plain files and people opt for a 3rd-party tool to backup live files (e.g., Exchange, databases, etc.

2.  Does anyone use disk image software to make an exact copy of Windows server 2003  (e.g., Acronis, CA, Double Image)?  Do I really need the server version of these products (~$500) or can I get by with the desktop versions (~$50)?

3.  Is it possible to make the backup utility save the files to a network-attached storage device?

4.  Is it possible to make the backup utility save files to a few XP workstations for extra protection?

For a server backup you can use the integrated windows backup. It will not be able to do backup of some open files though still it will be good enough for a server restore. A 3'd party backup program have the ability to backup open files on Exchange and SQL for example if you buy the agents for it. You will have more control since you can watch all backups in a central manager.
To do an image is not so practical since you have to do the image while booting into another OS which means your server will be down.
To copy a backup set to another computer is no problem. Can be done with windows scheduler and cmd files

You can make a directory as shared on the workstation. You can also always use \\workstationnam\c$ or whatever disk you have
