Veritas backup exec 10.0 (overwrite/device offline)
I have veritas backup exec 10.0 on a 2k server and the remote agent on a w2k3 server. I have the w2k3 server backing up to a folder on the w2k server to backup daily. I have noticed that the folder "device" the w2k3 is backing up to goes offline daily and I also noticed that I keeps asking to overwrite media when in the properties I have it set to "OVERWRITE"... any help is greatly appreciated.

Keep in mind that this is backing up to a folder and not to tape ( that's a seperate job and is working fine).
This is grabbing selected files off of a server then moving to another folder on a different server. All the permissions a set to overwrite and don't know why the folder it backs up to goes offline.. once I get the folder/device online then it prompts to overwrite.
Where are you suggesting I look? I have been working with this for a little over a week...

gpriceee - I went into the:
Under media
Media sets --> MEDIASETNAME
right click --> proerties --> General Tab --> Overwrite protection period
Choose the number of hours--NOT days.
and noticed that it was set to not overwrite. I went ahead and changed it to allow overwirite.
Thank you.. Hope this works.. I'll keep monitoring it for a few days..

I think I know the problem.
Have you created a different media set for the folder?
If not, go to media--you can get there off of the blue tabs or from the file menu: Window --> Media
Right click Media Sets --> New Media Set. . . .
Assign it an intuitive name, such as FolderMedia
General Tab:
Change the protection Period to 1 hour.
Leave Append period Infinite--allow append
Vault Rules Tab:
None.
OK
Go to Job Setup
On the job you're using for the backup to folder, right click --> Properties
On the left-hand side under Destination, click on Device and Media
In the right-hand pane, change the Media set to the one you just created (FolderMedia)
Submit

Make sure you have one media set for the tapes and another for the folder because you're using different overwrite periods.

Ok changed the protection Period to 1 hour and left the Append period Infinite--allow append
What does the protection period for 1 hour mean?
What does the protection period for 1 hour mean?
The protection period does not allow you to overwrite the media within that time period.
Let's say your backup tapes are handled by you. You know the rotation.
You go on vacation--I know, it's a dream--and someone else is supposed to handle the tapes. That person gets confused or doesn't show up to work. Without a protection period, the tapes in the drives would be overwritten.
If you rotate tapes avery 7 days, the protection period should be set to 6 days. If you have monthy rotation, the protection period should be set to 27 days--if you don't use month-specific tapes. The protection period should be 1 day less than the rotation so that on the rotation day, the tape can be written to.
As for disks, folders, 1 hour is fine because you're not going to overwrire the data unless you need to. If you set the protection period to longer, and the job hangs for a while during the backup and doesn't end at its normal time, your folder backup might not run the next time if the protection window has been hit.

If you backup daily, the media should be set to 1 hour or a short time.
