Win 2000 server Login log

I am running Win 2000 server.  The Security log in event viewer is not showing records of login and logout activity.  Is there any way to get this to show in the event viewer?

The security log will only show login activity if you set the policy applied to that machine to audit account logon and logon  events.  Logoff auditing doesn't work that way you think it should in windows 2000 and so will be useless if you want track track (for instance) the amount of time a user accessed a system.

If the server is a member of a domain then you should be setting the group or local security policy. If it is standalone then you can only set the local security policy.

Use the MMC.EXE tool to edit local or group policies, the options are here:
MACHINE    Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy    Audit account logon events
MACHINE    Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Audit Policy    Audit logon events
