Never used SQL server - is it totally command line based (like mysql) or is there a gui?

There is a GUI called the Enterprise Manager.  It is meant for administration, though.  If you're looking for a user interface, that usually comes in the form of a custom front-end, such as Access, a VB project, ASP, etc.

Aside from Enterprise Manager, there is also the Query Analyzer where you can execute scripts and SQL statements.

You can execute most of the commands in SQL server using the command line.
Check out command lines for isqlw, and SQL server.
The command lines may not be simple and straightforward, but they are there.
Several GUIs are available as well, anywhere from Enterprise Manager, or proprietary GUIs.
I would list the popular GUIs here, but would get thrown out of this web site :)
