I have a hacker that is grinding away on my server using "webmaster" as the user id.  In lue of trying to chase down the IP etc. is there a way to zap that particular ID.  It is not in my system as a valid account btw.

If it doesn't exsist the authentication will fail anyway... what do you mean zap?

Perhaps I don't have a good grasp on how a password guessing attack works.  My thought was that if an account was used improperly, such as the lockout policy I have in place, the system would lock out use of that name and subsequently make the hacker have to use a different name.  (Attempting to make it more difficult to run the attack in the first place)

As he is using an account with no local permissions anyway, he is wasting his time. That is ofc if it is a male.

Thanks Rick
Just trying to make sure the doors are locked and the "kiddies" are needing to look elsewhere!

Password guessing is only useful if your guessing on an account with sufficient local access to perform something afterwards.
