Stop Error which MS says can indicate hardware error

My customer is getting a Stop Error which MS says can indicate hardware error. The manufacturer is Compaq Model: Presario 6400NX. I am being sent a new MB to replace this one, but I am being told something aboutt tattooing the BIOS? To make it match the MB? Or something like that. I have replaced many many mother boards and I have never even heard of this! Doesn’t anyone know the steps required for doing this? And in lame mans terms maybe tell me how to do this and in what order?! My appt is Thursday. Thank you!!!!

The BIOS setting of the new mainboard must be set to match those of the old mainboard. From my understanding, Compaq uses a proprietary modified BIOS which stores the information on a utility partition on the hard drive. The steps are available at Compaq, but I'll have to look as they vary by model. By the way, do you really want lame man terms or will layman's terms do?

This is how to flash, but don't forget to enter the BIOS and reset the default settings to the optimized settings that you should record from the old mainboard and BIOS, following the installation of the new mb/flash.
