Outlook receive mail times out when more than one message available from VPOP3

VPOP3 is setup on windows 2000 server with SBS 2000. Mail is being downloaded to server OK but when client tries to recieve the mail it times out if more than one mail is waiting in the server VPOP3 mailbox. Exchange has been disabled on server and VPOP3 is using ports 111 and 26 to send and receive pop3 mail (different to exchange ports). If only one mail is in VPOP3 mailbox, the client is able to download no problem. when testing the mail account in outlook email account setup, all boxes are ticked to indicate mail is setup correctly. Clients are running XP SP2 with Outlook XP SP3 installed. Please help asap. thanks
