PHP is simpler, and more web hosting solutions support it; so, I would personally go for PHP (oh, and PHP is easier [for me at least]).

If you just design a website, I think HTML and CSS is good enough. When you need programming for your site, then you can choose between PHP or .NET, it depends on your expertise. Choose the language you are more comfortable to work with?

.NET isn't any easier than PHP in my opinion.  I have coded in ASP.NET/C# at work for 3 years and have coded in PHP after hours for the same amout of time.  Personally, I like PHP much better.  It is easy to learn, cheap to deploy, and supported by nearly every hosting company on the planet.  .NET is none of these things really.

Well, that really comes down to opinion... you can achieve just about everything in PHP, as you can with .Net, but I'm sure that many would choose .Net as a more powerful language.. but in both mine and ChastityMan's opinion, it isn't at all easier than PHP..

Answer these questions, then we should be able to tell you which technology would be best to use:

       (i)   Do you know either PHP or .Net? If so, which one are you more comfortable with?
(ii)  What sort of website do you want to create? (ie; what are you trying to achieve exactly?)

I like PHP myself, as it works on both windows, linux and mac. The syntax for both is quite different, as to an extent is the way of thinking. PHP also has a much larger community and there are many script for you to use and learn from, which can make it a lot eaiser to learn. However many of my friends who code in think that PHP is archaic and has a nasty syntax and I say the same out their langauges. Both can do the same amount so it is mainly down to which language you find eaiser. If you go to they have some good tutorials on both with lots of example code, from there choose which one you like the look of most as everyone is different. Hope that helps.
