FTP download times out!!!

Hello,

I have FTP configured on my server 2003.  I have a client that is downloading files from my machine to hers.  She's able to download the smaller files, under 10 megs but the larger files, 20+ megs, the download "time out".  I'm not at her machine when it happens but she says it gets down to about 2 minutes remaining and hangs and just won't finish.  I'm using Serve-U ftp and noticed a check box under settings that is checked by default called "adaptive time out".  Could this be a factor?  I went to their site and couldn't find any info on this problem.  Anybody else ever see this????

Thanks,
chris

When I say "timeout", it's not an actual error but an expression.  In other words, it hangs and virutally stops before the download finishes...

Ask her if she is running antivirus on a firewall or other network device at her end. I saw this before, where the antivirus software was analyzing the data being transferred prior to it going to the PC pulling down the files, but needed to wait until the entire file was received to check it for virus patterns. Smaller files were received, checked quickly, and transferred to the PC,  but larger files took so long to pull down and analyze that the PC requesting the file gave up on the transmission.

A good sign of this is if the FTP client at her end shows bursts of activity when downloading multiple files...i.e. 10% for a long time, and then jumps quickly to 15% or 20%, then pauses, and then jumps up again. This would be evidence that something in between is capturing whole files before transferring them, as opposed to just passing each packet as it comes in.

What was the end fix? DrTCP tweak?

Nope...adjusted auto-timeout on FTP client to infinity (in other words, don't timeout unless manually told to do so). In the end, I believe that they dropped the antivirus checking on FTP transfers, and went with a local PC AV solution (with Plicy serevr to enforce compliance).
