Scanjet IIcx Software install in Windows XP

Has anyone on list been able to install a driver for an HP Scanjet IIcx in XP Pro other than the WIA driver Windows shipped with? I've tried the latest productivity app ( Deskscan 2.9 ) from HP as well as a couple of older verisons.  They all hang after starting out ok, eventually forcing me to kill the 16bit subthread created for the install from task manager. The HP site suggests the drivers for the scanjet 4100C and 5100C will work, however they do not offer a driver for it, just updates and utilities.  

This scanner is functional using the WIA driver, it just takes a number more steps to create 'X' quality scans using this driver than HP scanning software usually takes, thus the desire for an HP program to scan from. The scanner is running as the only SCSI device on the chain, terminated at the scanner, connecting to an Adaptec AIC-7850 controller.

FWIW this PC is still running SP1.

Since this is an older scanner, it can be that your best option is a dual boot on your system, where you set up a win98SE partition; then you can use the normal driver and software
