I am constantly running into issues where I want to view the rights of a share or NTFS permissions and when I look at the list of users all I see is numbers associated with a SID and cant determine who the user or group is????

I am logged on the server as domain admin and still get ? s-1-5-12-afadfaf-faff--"etc".  Instead of the actual name or Group..

a user has been deleted

the user is in a domain that is no longer trusted

the machine you are sat at cannot contact the domain

all these things will cause you to see a user/groups GUID instread of the friendly user/group name
