Microsoft SMS Server

Hello Experts!

I am thinking of buying sms server, primarilary for patch management.

Can anyone advise me whether this is a good product or what else people use it for, or like about this product?

Cheers,

Roger

If with "patch management" you mean hotfixes, then SMS is probably overkill. Have a look at Microsoft's (free) Software Update Services (soon to be Windows Server Update Services), which will let you mirror a part of the Windows Update page in your own network and control their distribution. SUS will only handle security and critical hotfixes (plus service packs); WSUS will offer additional update features, like Office and SQL, for example.

SMS is a good product if you have a large (enough) environment and want to deploy software and manage client machines without visiting every machine.
